Pennsylvania has been a hotbed for emo music for over 15 years, hosting huge names that revived the sound of midwest emo with a rust-belt attitude. While the Eastern side of the state has housed legendary acts such as Modern Baseball, Title Fight, and Algernon Cadwallader, among many others, the western side of Pennsylvania was growing a strong local scene of upstart bands. Among them is I Swallow Ghosts, who have been delivering their blend of alternative emo since 2019, and on February 28th, 2025 the group have released their newest single, Penjamin Frankhit, which sucks you in right from the intricate opening riff, and gives the listener a raw, earnest track discussing life’s mind numbing routines. With an infectious hook with relatable lyricism, fans of early Hot Mulligan EPs Fenton and Honest & Cunning will find a new band to enjoy here.

We spoke to the band regarding the release of the track in our exclusive interview here:

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music? What bands/artists inspire you the most?

It's sort of like Math Rock, but we can only count to 4.

I think for ISG we are all over the place regarding inspiration. For me personally, bands like Oliver Houston, Cloud District, Modern Baseball and Swordfish have all heavily influenced this project.

What is the track about lyrically? What message do you want to bring to the listener?

Penjamin Frankhit is about self medicating my way through the constant existential dread of life. Whether it's scenarios I make up in my own head or the fear of getting older and becoming like my parents. Also, ironically, how self medicating is making me think these thoughts. The never ending cycle of fixing a self inflicted problem.
